Strategic Forecasting Retreats
I provide customized future focused scenario-based strategic forecasting retreats. These are not traditional strategic planning sessions. I approach each agenda with a beginner’s mind. At least part of the retreat is devoted to exploring key technological or societal trends. Then we spend the rest of our time together conducting exercises and small group discussions on critical questions relevant to your industries and professions in order to explore the nature of the future. It is my strong belief that preparing for a world of exponential change can’t begin with a SWOT analysis and a laundry list of things to do. I want to help your board and other volunteer leaders develop their forecasting muscle so they can be better equipped to face an uncertain future.
I provide retreat experiences designed for young professionals without the “patronizing” age-based lens. Like the strategic forecasting retreats, we spend a great deal of time talking with young professionals about technology shifts that are poised to impact their industries and professions. We also spend time discussing how younger members can improve and impact not only their specific industries and professions, but the association system they are surrounded by. Our processes are collaborative and each agenda is customized to talk about issues that will resonate with your attendees as well as meet the specific outcomes you want to hit. I have conducted these retreats for such organizations as the American Society of Association Executives (4 years) and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.
As author William Gibson said, “The future is already here – it just isn’t evenly distributed yet.” I frequently present keynotes, workshops and webinars on issues around coming technological shifts and the future we are already immersed in, but maybe haven’t noticed quite yet. I find associations to be compelling platforms for encouraging, implementing and helping individuals effectively cope with radical changes in the industries and professions they represent.
In-Person or Virtual Board Orientation
Every association Board needs to have a solid orientation to their duties at least once per year, or when new board members join however not everyone can afford to fly a consultant out to their board meetings just for this. I think this is a problem that can be solved. Every board, no matter how small, needs to understand its role and the legal requirements of board service. Due to demand, I’m now offering a 90 minute, virtual board orientation piece for small boards (13 members or less) in addition to the in-person options we have. All you need is a high speed internet connection, laptop or other mobile device equipped with a webcam and a Skype or Google Hangouts account. We can also conduct orientations via webinar or conference call as well.
The Association Hotline
Sometimes association executives or senior staff need someone to confidentially talk to, bounce ideas off of or explore a particular governance or management issue with. If you are part of a small staff, we all know sometimes things come up that you need to think through but can’t share quite yet. Or maybe you are wondering what big trends you need to be keeping an eye out for or want to talk about professional development programming. Whether you are in a jam with your board, would just like some help thinking through something or need a word of advice, let me know! I can help in 15, 30 and 60 minute increments. The Future of Education
I firmly believe associations hold the keys to industry and profession specific education. You can read the white paper I co-wrote with Elizabeth Weaver Engel, MA, CAE here – The Association Role in the New Education Paradigm. I would be happy to help you think through these important issues and begin to prepare a more sophisticated approach to your future educational programming.
